A member of the Asbury Seminary faculty since 1989, Dr. Pohl has significant experience in urban ministry, public policy and women’s issues. She is the author of Making Room: Recovering Hospitality as a Christian Tradition (Wm. B. Eerdmans, 1999) and co-author of Responding to Refugees: Christian Reflections on a Global Crisis (Crossroads, 2000). Contemporary socio-ethical concerns, Christian hospitality, moral betrayal, refugees, abortion and public policy are topics of her recent journal articles, essays and presentations. Articles by Dr. Pohl have been published in the Annual of the Society of Christian Ethics, Bioethics and the Future of Medicine, Living Responsibly in Community and Christians and Politics Beyond the Culture Wars. Current areas of research and writing include the relationship between Christian beliefs and practices, and evangelical women in theological studies. Prior to her appointment at Asbury, Dr. Pohl served as director of program development at a church in metropolitan New York, where she coordinated services to a large community of refugees. She served on the national administrative staff of Bread for the World Educational Fund in New York. Dr. Pohl was a 1996-97 recipient of a major sabbatical grant through the Christian Faith and Life Initiative Program, awarded by the Louisville Institute in cooperation with the Lilly Endowment. She is active in various ministries, including the Christian Center for Urban Studies, Brick by Brick United Methodist Church in Lexington, Ky., and Asbury’s Kingdom Conference. Dr. Pohl is a member of the Society of Christian Ethics, the American Academy of Religion and several honorary societies.
