Licensure Process for MFT-Associate in KY – Version: 2010

  1. Complete your degree in Marriage and Family Counseling.
  2. Apply to the LMFT board to be a Marriage and Family Therapist Associate.
    • Pay the fee.
    • Include your supervision contract with your application. Be sure your supervisor has completed the mandatory MFT Board-approved CEUs for supervisors.
  3. Complete two years’ experience in the practice of marriage and family therapy, acceptable to the board and subsequent to being granted a master’s degree.
    • Your supervisor must be a LMFT Board-approved supervisor (see the LMFT Board website for a list of approved supervisors).
    • You must register a written contract for supervision with the LMFT Board.
    • You cannot practice as an Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Associate until the Board has your supervisory contract on file.
    • A copy of your supervision contract must accompany your application for Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Associate that you submit to the state board.
  4. Complete a minimum of 200 hours of clinical supervision acceptable to the board and subsequent to being granted a master’s degree.
  5. Pass a written examination that is established and scheduled by the LMFT Board.
    • You may apply to take the exam concurrent with your application to be Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Associate.
