Examen Prayer Retreat

Examining the Life God is Shaping

The practice of a Daily Examen began more than 400 years ago and is a scheduled time of prayerful meditation and reflection upon your relationship with God. St. Ignatius of Loyola encouraged his followers to practice daily prayer in order to better understand the workings of the Holy Spirit. He viewed the Examen as a gift from God, seeing it as an opportunity to gain spiritual sensitivity and discern direction from God through extended prayer and contemplation.

We invite Asbury doctoral candidates to initiate their extended season of study – the three years of study, exertion, Sabbath and community-building – in the same manner, with an extended Examen. The Examen is a means of cultivating a daily practice, but one that can be focused upon over a series of days (each Sunday afternoon for 90 days before residency), or for a dedicated season (30-days before each residency).
