Alumni Council Update

Published Date: November 2, 2012

Dear Alumni,

Our Alumni Council met at the Wilmore campus October 16-17th.  There were twenty-five members present from six countries.  As always it was a blessing and joy to see them again and celebrate Asbury’s growth since we last met.  Hearing about their ministries through their various callings gives us a snapshot of all that you are doing beyond Lexington Avenue.

On Tuesday, October 16th, the Council received a devotion from Dr. Ellsworth Kalas, Senior Professor of Homiletics, which is always a treat.  Later Ms. Tammy Cessna, the Director of Alumni and Church Relations, shared with the Council everything that happened at Asbury since their last meeting in March.  Mr. Jay Mansur, VP of Advancement talked about Asbury on Us which is a wonderful event that allows people to visit Asbury as honored guests.  Dr. Russell West, Associate Dean of the Beeson Center, and Dr. Bryan Sims, Assistant Professor of Leadership and Lay Development Director for the Center of Lay Mobilization, updated the Council on the advancements from the Beeson Center.

Rev. Dr. Tom Harrison, Alumni Council President and Pastor at Asbury United Methodist Church in Oklahoma, brought the message to the chapel service that day.  After lunch, Dr. Marilyn Elliott, VP of Community Formation, shared about the exciting developments coming out of our Community Formation team.  VP of Enrollment Management and Student Services, Mr. Kevin Bish updated the Council about all the efforts Asbury has made toward lower costs for students.  Dr. J.D. Walt, Associate Vice President for Advancement and Special Counsel to the President, talked about the entire Seedbed experience.

The Council then took tours of the new single housing.  They were also treated to a visit with Mrs. Ellen Stamps, wife of our Dean of Chapel Dr. Bob Stamps.  She spoke about the exciting community building that happens in the Asbury married housing located in Kalas Village.  She is a real agent of God’s love to the families living there, especially the children.  After the tours, the Council ate dinner with Dr. Timothy C. Tennent and Mrs. Julie Tennent at beautiful Rose Hill.

On Wednesday, October 17th, the Council began with a devotion from Dr. Steve Seamands, Professor of Christian Doctrine, which will certainly find its way into some future sermons.  Ms. Joy Brinkmeyer, Administrative Assistant to the Director of Alumni, shared about the advances within the Alumni Office.  Ms. Tammy Cessna followed Joy with a discussion about the Council’s constitution and bylaws.   The event was capped by hearing Mrs. Sheryl Marks-Williams deliver a wonderful and challenging message full of truth in beautiful Estes chapel. Although the meetings completed on Wednesday a couple of our internationals stayed here for a couple of days. Due to this we had the privilege of hearing Dr. Prabhu Singh preach in chapel on Thursday.

We at the Alumni Office are so blessed to share Asbury with our Alumni Council.  We would ask our Alumni community to keep our Council in prayer.  The goal is to build stronger Alumni connection and services to better offer God’s Kingdom to our world.

May the Lord Bless All of Our Alumni,

Tammy, Misti Dawn, Joy, and Sandra
