What is a Cross-Cultural Ministry Experience?
mentored Ministry Team
Ellen Marmon
Mentored Ministry Co-Director—Kentucky
Dr. Ellen Marmon is joining our Mentored Ministry team as the assistant director. Ellen graduated from Asbury Theological Seminary with a M.A. in Christian Education and served at Centenary UMC for 16 years before joining the Asbury faculty full time in Christian Discipleship in January 2005. She brings a unique focus to Mentored Ministry since she has experienced the roles of a student doing MM, a mentor of students at the local church level and now as a reflection group leader on campus. Ellen's doctoral research focused on students experiencing cross-cultural ministry at Orlando campus and the changes that came about in their lives as a result. She brings a wealth of knowledge to her position, and we are blessed to have her.
Amanda Sturdevant
Mentored Ministry Coordinator—Kentucky
Amanda assists students in the Mentored Ministry office as they coordinate their academic responsibilities along with the ministry opportunity in the church of their choosing. She is new to Asbury Seminary, having come to campus in June. She previously worked in the health insurance field and although this is different from where she came she welcomes the new challenge. This position combined with staff assistant to Asbury's counseling department has definitely taught her how to multi-task.
She attended Asbury College where she completed an undergraduate degree in Media Communications. Amanda is originally from Louisville, KY, but don’t be fooled, she is a UK fan, GO BIG BLUE! She met her husband Bill while attending her best friend’s wedding; the couple has been married for 2 years. Bill was a student at Asbury as well, although the two never met while they were enrolled. Bill went on to UK where he received his PharmD degree and works in Nicholasville as a pharmacist. Amanda and Bill live in Wilmore; and love it! Although they don’t have any children yet, they keep busy with their dog, Chloe. Amanda and her husband also work as the young adult coordinators at their church in Nicholasville. Amanda is very excited about her new position as the Mentored Ministry Coordinator and looks forward to meeting all of the students soon!
Daryl Smith
Mentored Ministry Co-Director—Florida
Associate Professor: mentored Ministry and Christian Leadership
Smith is no stranger to Asbury Seminary. Before joining the Asbury Seminary—Florida faculty in 2000, he served as the Continuing Education program administrator (1986-92) and as a visiting lecturer in Christian education (1984-92) on the Kentucky campus. As an ordained pastor in the Free Methodist Church, Daryl has served in many ministry roles over his 30+ years of pastoring, including campus, small group, street, music and Spiritual Formation ministries. He has also served as a teaching partner for Serendipity House and an adjunct professor at Northeastern Seminary. He and his wife, Carolyn, have three grown children: Dawn Elise, Andrew Benjamin (daughter-in-law, Emily; granddaughter, Ailey) and Emily Margaret. For fun and fitness he runs marathons with Dawn and Andrew—five at last count.
Gary L. Jackson
Mentored Ministry Administrative Assistant—Florida
Gary, the most recent addition to the Mentored Ministry team, joined the staff of Asbury's Florida campus in August of 2007. He has been a student in the M.Div. program since Fall of 2005. Prior to pursuing a call of proclamation, Gary spent ten years in the insurance industry as a field claims representative. He is currently a member of Awaken Orlando Wesleyan Church where he serves in the homeless outreach - "Impact Orlando." Gary is married to Christina and their 16 year old son, Skylar, is a drummer in a local heavy metal band. The Jackson Clan also has two Schnauzers - George and Gracie, and two cats - Badger and Bandit. Gary is an instrument rated private pilot and has held E.M.T. certification. Being born and raised in Arkansas, he naturally loves the Arkansas Razorbacks and would be happy to teach you how to "Call the Hogs." Woo Pig Sooie!
