Dr. Tennent is calling the Asbury Community to come together for a Day of Prayer and Fasting, Monday, April 25, 2016.

2Chronicles7.14_REVFollowing a long Christian tradition, and in the footsteps of those who have led Asbury Seminary down through the years, President Timothy Tennent is calling the entire Asbury community (trustees, friends, alumni, students, faculty and staff) to humble ourselves in prayer before God. In humility and gratitude we recognize how much God has blessed us and sustained our founding vision for nearly 100 years, with over 10,000 graduates all over the world. We need to pray for our 2023 Strategic Plan, that we would be faithful to the vision God has called us to in our time. We also are behind in our “Wesley Fund,” which supports the work of the seminary. This shortfall has been God’s gift to us, because it has reminded us anew how dependent we are upon God for our provision. We need to specifically pray that God would meet this need between now and the end of June. Finally, we want to pray for the spiritual renewal and awakening of our seminary community and our nation.

To accomplish this sacred task of prayer, the following organizational decisions have been made:

  • Classes are cancelled, business offices and the library are closed from 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Essential services such as the Switchboard and the Inn will remain open.
  • Staff will be paid for their hours or time of regular work and be freed up to share in the work of prayer. Dress is casual for all.
  • Faculty are encouraged to participate throughout the day. Faculty will join together for prayer in BC157 at 1:00 p.m.
  • The cafeteria will be closed through the noon hour, but will re-open at five p.m. for a picnic dinner. (Swipe cards and cash payment at the door.)
  • A rhythm of community prayer is being prepared and will be provided prior to April 25.
  • Child care is provided from 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. at the Community House. The afternoon events are suitable for children.

Fasting is a deeper way to participate in this prayer day. If you do not understand fasting, please click here to view Seedbed information on fasting. Participate in the fast in the way that the Lord leads you.

A Syrian Refugee family that we have been waiting to sponsor is arriving on April 25 at midnight. This convergence with our day of prayer has holy significance. Our work of prayer will include praying for this family and gathering funds to support their resettlement into Lexington. Our goal to cover our support is $4,000. It is fitting that we will share our gifts with the poor while we seek God to provide for our needs.
