Kentucky Campus – More Info
Asbury Theological Seminary was founded in 1923 on the original campus of Wilmore, Kentucky, a historic community and retreat-like setting that provides an ideal environment for theological education, personal spiritual formation and the experience of living in community. Nestled within the hills of the beautiful bluegrass state, Wilmore provides a unique community of people from 50 countries and nearly every state that have come together to join the common cause of preparing to be Christian leaders.
Wilmore’s population of nearly 6,000 includes over 1,000 students at Asbury Theological Seminary and 1,300 students attending Asbury College. As you approach campus, you will drive past miles of historical stone fences that weave between the hilly countryside and border the narrow roads. The springtime and summer months bring opportunities to explore the many parks and activities that speckle the Kentucky countryside. Hiking and biking trails weave their way through the thick landscape, hidden from view by the layers of green that stand out in vibrant denial of the waning months and coming of fall. Campers, rock climbers, and kayakers utilize the warm weather and scale the rocky terrain of the Kentucky hills in search of adventure.
Fall is marked by the dramatic change of seasons from the luscious bluegrass fields of summer to the autumn leaves that transform the landscape into a colorful collage. The excitement of new student orientation and a new semester beckon people from their summer journeys and unite us back in the classroom, the chapel and in the dining commons for another session of preparation and formation. The winter season celebrates the much anticipated “Christmas in Wilmore” week of events during which Main Street is filled with the town’s residents, guided by white lights that line the business roofs. Freshly baked cookies, spice bread, and pies waft their sweet scent through the door and onto the street, luring visitors into the shops and filling them with the flavor of Christmas.
The Wilmore campus is located 16 miles south of Lexington, Kentucky, an urban area with a population of nearly 300,000. Lexington provides all of the opportunities and luxuries of city life through its expansive urban county landscape. The famous horse races gather for competition twice a year, as well as Bluegrass music festivals, museum shows, and several educational institutions’ athletic events. Inner-city ministry opportunities abound with growing immigrant and refugee populations.
Louisville and Cincinnati are each 70 minutes from Lexington. Knoxville and Nashville are both within three and one-half hours. Lexington is served by American-Eagle, A.S.A., ComAir, Continental Airlines, Delta, Northwest/Mesaba, T.W.E., USAir, United Express, and the Greyhound Bus Company. Louisville International Airport is located only 71 miles from campus.
