Diploma in Advanced Theological Studies and Bachelor of Arts

Over 15 years ago, a leading Hispanic pastor in Orlando walked into the Florida Dunnam Campus, and with great concern for the Latino community, asked if a program might developed to educate Hispanics. Several months later, a pilot class was held with great success. It was evident to the Asbury administration that the need for theological education in Spanish among the Latino community was great. This marked the birth of LMFP. These few classes evolved into a robust program that features a curriculum with 90 credits, and two concentrations (pastoral studies and counseling).

LMFP students typically fall into two categories. Some simply wish to deepen their knowledge of theology, biblical studies, and/or counseling. Students can accomplish this goal by completing the 36-credit Certification. This certification affords students quality education and training, achievable in a reasonable period of time, which they can put to use in their ministries. Other students come because they have felt a call to full-time ministry and are seeking to achieve an academic degree. Such students will work toward completing the 60-credit Diploma. Having completed this degree, the students have the opportunity to continue with graduate studies in a theological seminary.

LMFP was the first program to be certified by AETH and ATS to offer a 60-credit diploma that is recognized by seminaries as a bachelor equivalent, thus opening a pathway to graduate school for the Latino community. Once a student completes the 60-credit diploma at LMFP, she or he can apply for graduate studies. Following are Asbury Seminary’s requirements for such LMFP students (note that these are in addition to Asbury Seminary’s requirements for admission into a master program)

  • LMFP GPA (Or the GPA from other approved programs. When GPA does not meet expected standard, then use the GRE as a secondary supplement.)
  • Faculty Recommendation
  • Theological Research Paper (Allows for evaluation of both the quality of theological thought and mastery of English for academic purposes.)
  • Ministry Experience
  • TOEFL, interview or waiver confirming ability to study in English

Admission Steps:

  • Admission application

  • Pastoral Recommendation

  • Brief Personal Essay
  • Theological Essay (500 words)
  • Two Personal References
  • Application Fee: $15.00

Duration

  • Twelve weeks per course
  • Classes meet on
Mondays, Tuesdays and/or Thursdays from 6:30-9:30 p.m. (some Saturday courses available)
  • The Program also offers Online and Hybrid Classes
