Towel and Basin Award 2017

Published Date: June 1, 2017

We are excited to announce our Towel and Basin Award Recipients for both the Florida-Dunnam and Kentucky campuses!  They both graduated this May with their Master of Divinity degrees. The Towel and Basin Award is a high honor. This award allows students, staff, and faculty to recognize someone who has displayed a servant’s heart in our community and in all areas of their life.  This award allows us to reflect upon the heart of Christ and how embodying this heart impacts our world.

Florida-Dunnam Campus:  Bobby Brooks

This year’s Towel and Basin Award Winner is an outstanding student, leader, and minister.  They have excelled in the classroom on many different levels.  However, it is the leadership and relationships that they have provided within the community that sets this person apart.  A naturally gifted leader, he is devoid of the kind of self-importance that often accompanies such giftedness.  He is humble yet confident of God’s calling and gifts; he is relational and accessible in spite of significant professional and ministry accomplishments and abilities; he is a servant who never flaunts his exceptional accomplishments and position.  During his time at Asbury he has served in classrooms, shared freely with staff and students, served in the Chapel as both a volunteer and in leadership capacities, and he is an outstanding minister in the United Methodist Church here in Orlando reaching out to Young Adults and Families with the message of the Gospel.  He was one chosen as one of our Senior Chapel speakers for 2017 and is this year’s recipient of the Towel and Basin Award for Outstanding Senior Graduate, Bobby Brooks.

Kentucky Campus:  Megan Byers

First Nomination:  Megan modeled what it means to be humble, yet confident; a woman with a gentle and quiet spirit, who knew her worth and put others before herself over and over again as an RA in Bettie and an upper level Kern scholar.  She always welcomed others and conducted herself in a manner worthy of respect.  She is a light on this campus and for all the world to see!

Second Nomination:  I really can’t describe Megan’s heart and incredible availability to all of us as a friend, mentor, proof reader and prayer warrior. She is one of the most authentic Christians I have met and it is proved by the way she loves. Her witness is her faith expressed through love. She has an open heart and open mind and when we are struggling with any perception or wrestling with a truth/piece of doctrine. She helps by explaining the heart behind each movement. Megan walks with God and you know this because she walks in step with what make His heart beat.  Her genuine love for God and people is displayed in how she relates. She makes time for sushi and studies. She listens with a non judgemental heart. Even when she can’t relate to an experience she has godly empathy for any suffering. Though she is smart, she does not use that for personal gain. Her intelligence she shares with others in a manner that people of all walks of life can understand. Her character is something that cannot be taught, but only lived. It is helpful as we imitate Christ to be surrounded by others on campus who are truly imitating Him in their walk. Her legacy of faith will ripple through thousands of generations.
