Discipling Children in the Large Church Class Invitation

Even when ministry is fulfilling and exciting, it can be challenging. And sometimes pastors feel alone, especially those who lead ministries with children. This past year, after talking or emailing with three Asbury Seminary graduates serving as children’s pastors who wanted to process questions and ideas relating to their ministries, I wondered, how many children’s pastors would be renewed by spending time together, reflecting, learning, and encouraging one another?

In February 2015, I will be leading an Asbury Seminary traveling class, “Discipling Children in the Large Church.” On January 31, we will travel to Atlanta and spend February 1-8 visiting churches, observing ministry with children in action, and learning from the children’s ministry teams in these churches. We will also visit congregations being renewed as they reach out to children and hear from individuals working to free children from the sex trade. The format of the course provides mealtimes and evenings for processing the experiences of the day and to encourage and enjoy one another.

Alumni who are children’s pastors, or have major responsibility for ministry with children in their church, are invited to take this course as a graduate auditor: to learn from objectively observing other children’s ministries, and processing together what they are observing and contributing and their own ministry experience. I believe this could be a time of encouragement, learning, and renewal.
