Dr. Jacqueline Smith Named Founding Dean of the School of Counseling at Asbury Seminary

Asbury Seminary is pleased to announce the hiring of Dr. Jacqueline Smith as the Founding Dean of the School of Counseling and Associate Professor of Counselor Education. Prior to coming to Asbury Seminary, Dr. Smith served as the Department of Counseling Chair and Program Director at Regent University. She will assume her position on July 1, 2022.

“I am thrilled that Dr. Jacquee Smith will be joining Asbury Seminary as the founding Dean of our School of Counseling to be launched in July of 2022,” Dr. Timothy C. Tennent, President of Asbury Seminary, said.  “She brings a wealth of experience and leadership from her work at Northern Kentucky University and, for the last six years, at Regent University.  She will enable us to go to new heights as one of the premier CACREP counseling programs in the country.”

Dr. Smith not only has many years of administrative leadership experience but also 30 years of experience in community mental health counseling, including eight years of private practice. Her scholarly interests include counseling ethnic/racial minority groups; religion and spirituality in counseling; group work; professional identity development and gatekeeping, and counselor training and supervision. Dr. Smith also currently serves on the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) board. She has published a variety of scholarly works with her most recent being a chapter titled “Diagnosis Issues with African Americans” in African Americans and Mental Health published in 2021.

Dr. Smith comes to us as a seasoned leader, administrator, faculty member, counseling professional, and CACREP Board member. She is solidly within our Wesleyan tradition and radiates the love of Jesus Christ,” Dr. Gregg Okesson, Provost of Asbury Seminary, said. “Dr. Smith helped lead successful counseling programs for the last decade at other institutions and knows intimately well all the dynamics related to CACREP accreditation and higher education administration. I am thrilled to announce her hire and know that she will be a tremendous asset to our institution as leader, colleague, teacher, mentor, and friend.”
