Whether you take online courses or hybrid courses at any of our extension sites or at our main campus, the Office of Global Formation is here to serve all of our non-residential students. Our core belief is that formation is a lifelong journey, and we are glad to be on that journey with you as you answer God’s call. As a Global Student, you will have opportunities to worship in community at our extension sites, join a discipleship group, engage in a variety of fellowship opportunities, and receive pastoral care and prayer. As we partner in this journey together, we ask that God would richly bless you, as you continue the process of deep, abiding formation that will last a lifetime.
The Global Formation team consists of four staff members, five chaplains, and a student worker. Our team’s mission is to offer non-residential students opportunities for spiritual formation and to facilitate a sense of belonging to the greater Asbury community. The sections below provide additional information about the different ways we seek to connect meaningfully with our students and their families.
The Asbury Global pastoral care team is available as needed and serves in a variety of capacities. These include making referrals to appropriate resources for counseling and professional coaching when requested, offering pastoral care calls, and supporting you throughout your time at Asbury. Communication with the pastoral care team will most often take place through email, phone calls, or Zoom meetings. Please complete this form if you would like to request pastoral care.
During the 2024-2025 academic year, both the Global Formation Team and the Community Formation Team are partnering with the E. Stanley Jones School of Mission and Ministry. We will be collaborating with Drs. Brad Johnson and Jim Hampton, each of whom will be teaching a section of CD501 Vocation of Ministry (VOM) in the Spring 2025 term. As part of the VOM course assignments, students are required to participate in “Covenant Discipleship Groups.” Through our partnership with Drs. Johnson and Hampton, we are developing a pipeline for students who wish to continue participating in a discipleship group format beyond the requirements of their course. If this collaboration proves to be fruitful, our goal is to expand our strategy to all sections of VOM throughout the 2025-2026 academic year.
As part of our work, we recently collaborated with the seminary’s Library, Information, and Technology Services (LITS) Team to develop a Canvas Course that will house our discipleship group system. Once students finish the requirements for their VOM class, they can indicate their interest in continuing into a longer term discipleship group format, at which time we will enroll them in the new Canvas Course. This is not a course in the traditional sense. It is not for credit, and there are no graded assignments. Instead, it contains short modules that allow groups to learn about and practice the historic Wesleyan Class Meeting format.
We recognize that not every student will be registering for VOM in the coming semesters. As such, we are available to talk with any student who might be interested in exploring the historic Class Meeting. If you would like to join or start a group or if you are simply interested in learning more, please complete this form.
Prayer is a vital part of our life in Christ. Our team wants you to know that we are available to pray with you and for you. Please fill out this form, and one of our team members will reach out to you by email or by phone. Please note that discretion is a priority for us. You can indicate in the form whether you would like us to share your prayer request with the entire prayer team or just with our director and associate directors.
At our extension sites, we coordinate chapel services for each hybrid course and provide a fellowship lunch following chapel. We staff these chapels with local preachers and worship leaders, as well as with our own professors and staff members. Our global site chaplains provide a pastoral presence for global students. There is one chaplain per site, and each chaplain is available to students primarily on chapel day to facilitate worship, coordinate hospitality, and host fellowship time. Each chaplain is also available to pray with students and offer formation-related resources.
Many of our hybrid courses are offered at the Kentucky campus in Wilmore. The Asbury Global Formation team provides snack breaks and community dinners during the three highest volume hybrid weeks of the Fall and Spring semesters. We also offer welcome bags to all hybrid students visiting Wilmore. We encourage students to stop by our offices on the first floor of the Cowen Building.
