Asbury CCM Grant in Knoxville, TN
My job allows me to see ministry in action, so I spent the day in an area of East Knoxville known for prostitution, homelessness, and violence. In the musty hall of ‘Magnolia’ my tour guide, Tim Jackson, wrapped his arm around a man that looked well beyond his age. The man was disheartened after a 2 beer morning and he received grace and truth in the prayers from Pastor Tim. Our tour continued with interruptions from volunteers and needs from the “regulars.” Those “interruptions” are his ministry.
Pastor Tim sees people. Being there for only a day, I was overwhelmed by the things that happen at Magnolia Avenue United Methodist Church. It is a real place for real people, dealing with real things. Love oozes from every part of the old walls of a church that houses a clinic, has a clothing bank, has bible studies, provides meals, connects people to much needed services, and does it all in Jesus’ name…every day. Day after day the exhausting pace of overwhelming need is met with strength and purpose.
This ministry received a matching grant from the Center for Church Multiplication and I could see that it barely scratches the need that exists on the front lines only a few hours from my comfy office chair in Wilmore. The Lord convicted me today.
Debbie, a retired ER nurse who works in the kitchen and serves in the clinic gave a woman much needed meds for high blood pressure. The woman asked, “Why would you do this for me?” The engaging eyes of this gritty nurse leaned into the question, “Because we are called to be the hands and feet of Jesus.” Debbie is not naïve, and she has robust compassion. To her it is simple.
Tim carries the courageous spirit of a kid that was homeless at 16 and faces the obstacles to his ministry with wisdom and organizational awareness that will yield God’s love in action for years to come. Get out of your chair and head down to Knoxville. Pastor Tim would appreciate the helping hands and your heart won’t leave unchanged.
