You must notify the Office of International Affairs before traveling outside the U.S. so that the 1-20 or DS-2019 can be endorsed for travel or a new form can be issued if required.

Dependents in F-2/J-2 status must have their own I-20 or DS-2019 endorsed in order to re-enter the US after travel abroad.

Students and scholars must complete and submit a “Request for Travel Letter” at least five (5) working days before the anticipated travel date, although you are strongly encouraged to submit the form even earlier.
