Alumni Spotlight: Dr. Dan Sandoval, Jr.
Dr. Dan Sandoval, Jr., DMin 2004
Dr. Sandoval’s salvation story was a long process beginning in the Philippines where he was raised for ten years in an urban third world country setting. Near where Dan lived was a sewage system that flowed into the Manila Bay. After a typhoon swept through the city, he saw two children fall over the edge of a concrete canal into the river. When Dr. Sandoval saw them fall, he knew he had only two choices – either to go get help or to jump in! Six months before this, his aunt took him to the ocean, and he nearly drowned. Even though he was terrified, Dan knew he had to jump in and attempt to save them. He and his brother saved both of those who had fallen, and this experience had a tremendous impact on Dan’s life purpose and calling. Several years later at the age of seventeen, Dr. Sandoval rode his motorcycle to church on a Friday evening in June of 1985. That night he wept before God at the altar and prayed, “I want to tell the whole world who you are.” After receiving salvation on Friday night, he went back to church on Sunday and was filled with the Holy Spirit. He knew from then on that he wanted to make sense of how his life could serve as a rescue mission for people who are “drowning.”
Dr. Sandoval was heavily considering signing up for the Navy when he received an important phone call from an instrumental family. They asked, “Do you want to go to a Bible School? We want to send you and pay for you.” Dan received this generous gift, and he believes that God recruited him as a spiritual navy seal. During his time in Bible School, Dr. Sandoval became very excited about serving God, and he was invited and challenged to go into missions. He spent three months in Sao Paulo, Brazil, sharing the love of God, and he could not get gospel tracts out fast enough. Dan’s heart broke for the people there, and he knew that he wanted to serve there to rescue, preach, and teach.
Dr. Sandoval and his wife, Tricia, have been together for twenty-seven years. They have led ministries for more than twenty-five years where they developed intuitive insights, knowledge, and understanding for how to intertwine God’s divine purposes among cultures and races. Together, they passionately communicate God’s Word and mentor men and women through Spirit-filled preaching and relevant teachings that transform individuals, cities, churches, and nations. Dan and Tricia planted a church in Sao Paulo, Brazil, in 1992, and they served there for ten years before moving back to the United States. Dan served as an Executive Pastor in South Florida in 2004, and in 2006 he became the Lead Pastor of Church on the Hill in Redlands, California where he led a successful revitalization campaign and transitioned the congregation into a healthy, diverse, missional, and multi-ethnic church. Receiving strategic direction from God, Dan and Tricia launched Tapestry Foundation Inc. in 2014 with a vision of “Empowering Global Leaders Everywhere for Godly Impact Anywhere.” Dr. Sandoval conducts leadership training and teaches in seminaries, churches and conferences both nationally and internationally the effective and essential “Tapestry Model” of leadership he has acquired and applied with great results in his own life and ministry.
Dr. Sandoval received a Bachelor of Arts from West Coast Christian College in 1989 with a specialization in Christian Ministries and Business, a Master of Divinity from Pentecostal Seminary in 1992 with a specialization in Cross-Cultural Ministries and World Missions, and a Doctor of Ministry from Asbury Theological Seminary in 2004 with a specialization in Leadership and Biblical Preaching. He is currently working on his Master of Business Administration at Regent University with a specialization in Kingdom and Social Entrepreneurship and Business as Mission. During his first year of MBA study in 2017, Dr. Sandoval launched two startup businesses; he is the Founder/CEO of AMIGOL and INSPIRATOURS. AMIGOL is a high-impact sports program that combines world-class athletic training, social transformation, and cultural immersion. INSPIRATOURS is a travel company specializing in hosting “inspirational tours” to Israel and around the world. Dan is gearing up to launch his third visionary venture called “iLead” – Innovative Leadership and Entrepreneurship Advanced Development.
Dr. Sandoval looks back on his time at Asbury with great appreciation for the high standard of education yet incredibly practical application to his life of ministry. After ten years of ministry, Dan participated in Asbury’s Doctor of Ministry program with excitement because he desired to have greater impact and be the best he could be in fulfilling his calling. He loved being apart of a diverse group of ministers and scholars as there were over twelve denominations and nationalities represented in his cohort. Dan stated, “Asbury took one called to leadership and equipped me to lead with excellence.” Asbury prepared Dr. Sandoval to be a servant leader who has both global and local vision, effectively trains other leaders, powerfully communicates the truth of the gospel, and is even more passionate about spreading the gospel and kingdom of God. He was inspired and challenged by John Wesley’s teaching, leadership, and passion for spreading the gospel as Wesley stated, “the world is my parish.”
Dr. Sandoval is passionate about developing multi-cultural ministries and leaders in the United States and internationally, and raising a generation of entrepreneurs who have a heart to reach the world through their businesses. Dan and Tricia currently live in Eugene, Oregon, and enjoy cycling, travelling, outdoor sport adventures, and tasting delicious food from around the globe. Above all, they love having fun with their amazing children, Sean, Lauren, and Danny.
