Asia Immersion Trip 2016
By Tori Moody, Kern Scholar, MDiv Student
I recently had the opportunity to travel to South Korea with faculty from Asbury Seminary, along with some D.Min. and M.Div. students. Our short immersion allowed us to get a snapshot of the Methodist Church’s large movement within South Korea. We used our visit to glean wisdom from Bishop Sundo Kim, Rev. Dr. Chung Suk Kim, and much other church planting and associate pastors. The eight days we toured South Korea were packed full with new experiences.
The Methodist Church in South Korea welcomed the Asbury group so warmly by showing us hospitality through delicious meals, thoughtful gifts,
housing and transportation. During my time in Korea I kept thinking, “What a blessing! I never could have afforded this experience on my own!” And even more so, I could have never experienced some of the special opportunities that were available to us through this trip.
We got to attend house church meetings where we saw the day-to-day ministry of the Methodist Church. The light of Christ really shone through that experience! The Korean church’s prayer ministry is beautiful! Pastors and laity alike ceaselessly lift up their families, their community, nation, and the world in powerful, spirit-filled prayer. It is inspiring! My most memorable experience was attending a prayer service at the demilitarized zone between South and North Korea. Our group met with a sizable group of Korean church members at a prayer chapel in the demilitarized zone to pray for reunification between the estranged countries. My eyes and heart have become opened to a new hope of unity between the two nations. I will continue to pray for our Korean brothers and sisters across the world.
Thank you Kern Scholarship donors!
What a blessing!
