Counseling CEU

In the spring of 2012, the Asbury Seminary Counseling Alumni Board began a discussion regarding continuing education credits for counselors. The conversation centered around the importance of the integration of theology and psychology. We all had received this integrative emphasis as we were trained at Asbury Seminary. Disappointment was expressed around the room as we talked about the fact that we all wanted to continue learning and growing but all of the opportunities for continuing education contained only secular training in psychology.

We, also, recognized that at Asbury Seminary, pastors have the chance to come back to Wilmore yearly for a Minister’s Conference but a similar option is not available to counseling graduates. That evening the first seminar for Asbury grads and area counselors was birthed:  A One Day Seminar: Theological Reflective Counseling.

On April 26, 2013, a classroom on the Asbury Wilmore campus became filled with laughter and hugs as counseling grads renewed ties and met other area counselors.

Kathy Milans, Asbury Seminary alum 2004,  opened the seminar with prayer. After eight years in the counseling field, and having attended many continuing education workshops, this was her first CEU training where prayer was part of the session.

Dr. Toddy Holeman, Asbury Seminary Counseling Professor,  presented a model for theologically reflective counseling that is applicable to various schools of counseling. Foundational to her model is the fact that theological reflection has the power to shape daily living.

In the afternoon, Phyllis Kiser, Asbury Seminary alum 2009, took a more narrow focus and shared her integration of a biblically based theology of sex. She spoke of God’s plan to reveal integrity, maturity, and passionate intimacy.

Participants encouraged the Alumni Counseling Board to continue presenting a yearly integrated CEU. This will be on the group’s agenda for their next meeting. We are open to any ideas for topics for 2014. If you have an idea, please contact Kathy Milans at kathymilans@gmail.com.
