Cruise – Scripture Comes to Life
by Sandra Blumanhourst, Asbury Theological Seminary, Wilmore Campus, Alumni Office
Have you ever read Scripture and wished you could go to the places about which you are reading and studying? To walk in the footsteps of the men and women of faith who came before us? There is something about being on the soil where so many generations have stood in faith. I remember standing in the Colosseum in Rome at the age of 17 not really grasping all this place held, yet knowing more lay in this amphitheater than I could fathom. In the years since, as I have studied Scripture, my memory is flooded with images of the Colosseum and the words leap off the pages of my Bible, becoming alive and personal.
While taking an exegetical course on the Acts of the Apostles, I began to dream about traveling on the missionary journeys of Paul, to be in the places he preached the Good News of Jesus through coastal cities and trade route towns. Next fall Asbury Theological Seminary is hosting such an opportunity to our Alumni and Friends. We will be taking a cruise from Athens to Istanbul as we explore the sites and history of Paul’s 2nd and 3rd Missionary Journeys. Former President of ATS, Dr. Maxie Dunnam, will be our guest speaker. This is an opportunity for us all to travel back into the first century world and walk in the footsteps of not only Paul, but the infant church. Just thinking about this lights the fire of faith. May you pray over this trip and joining us aboard the Azamara Advantage as we travel together through Paul’s missionary journeys. May the word of God come to life for us all on this voyage.
