Editorial: Adulting is Hard

Published Date: August 2, 2024

Dear little bro,

It sounds mushy, but it seems like just yesterday I saw you for the first time. Our tired mom put a little blue bundle in my three-year-old arms. Since that moment, I’ve wanted to protect you. I know that’s silly, and I can’t protect you from the cruel realities of our fallen world. But, here is my gift to you: encouragement from my extra three years of wisdom.

I know things have been tough recently. Seasons of transition are difficult, and you’ve had several major changes all at once.

It’s a big deal to graduate from college. Going from student life to post-grad life is a major switch. It’s also heart-wrenching to say “goodbye” to the friends you’ve become accustomed to seeing every day. But, the undergraduate college community you had is a great one – I’m confident it’s strong enough to make it through time and distance.

You’ve moved to a place you don’t know, too. It’s hard enough to find a job in your field, and even harder in a spot where you don’t have social capital. Give yourself grace – you’re doing everything you can. The Lord will open doors as you need them most. I know you believe that, and I’m praying for the day when it all comes together.

If all of that wasn’t enough, your wedding day is right around the corner. You and your fiancée are making the final preparations, and I know you are both doing what needs to be done to prepare your hearts and minds for a God-honoring marriage. Many days, I can’t believe you’re this grown up, but the more I hear you talk about it, the more I’m convinced that you’re ready.

I’ll be 100% real: adulting is hard, and sometimes it really stinks. But, on the hard days, look back. Look at the evidence of the Lord’s goodness over your whole life, especially the hardest seasons. Major change is hard, too, but such change takes a caterpillar and turns it into a butterfly.

So, here is my charge to you: be strong in the Lord. Take heart, for He has overcome the world. Be strong and courageous, for the Lord is with you wherever you go. I think you know I’m here for you despite the distance, but the Lord who cares even for the sparrow is always closer than the air you breathe.

I’m praying for you, bro, and I know the Lord has a plan in all of this.

With love,

Your adoring big sister
