“Upon this Rock: Church Planting & Missional Community in the 21st Century”

November 5-7, 2013

*Free Event*

Conference Speakers: Bishop Graham Cray, Archbishops’ Missioner and Team Leader of Fresh Expressions. Before serving in this capacity, he was the Bishop of Maidstone and the Bishop of the Diocese of Canterbury, the principal of Ridley Hall, Cambridge, a Church of England Theological College, and the vicar of St. Michael-le-Belfrey, York.

Bishop Sundo Kim, Rev. Dr. Sundo Kim pastored Kwanglim Methodist Church in Seoul, South Korea for 30 years. Under his guidance and leadership, the church grew to be the largest Methodist church in the world. Bishop Kim joined the Board of Trustees at Asbury Seminary in 1996. In 2005, Asbury Seminary dedicated the Bishop Sundo Kim Chair of Evangelism and Practical Theology.Q:

Q: What are the key features of this year’s conference?

A: This year the conference will focus on “Church Planting” looking at different models. Our keynote speakers will be Bishop Cray from the UK and Bishop Kim from Korea.

Q: How does the title “Upon this Rock: Church Planting & Missional Community” relate to the Seminary’s vision of a global community?

A: The seminary has just instituted a new MA in Church Planting, so we thought it would be good to focus on this theme for Kingdom Conference this year. This is why we have invited two bishops, as well as others, who have been quite successful at church planting using different methods.

Q: How long has Kingdom Conference been a part of the Asbury Seminary community?

A: This year we are celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Kingdom Conference.

Q: You have been involved with Kingdom Conference for almost 20 years. Why is Kingdom Conference important to you and what made you decide that you wanted to be part of Kingdom Conference?

A: I’ve only been involved with KC since I came to Asbury in 2006. I got involved with it because it has always had a missional and cross-cultural/intercultural focus.

Q: What are a few of the events that you personally look forward to each year at Kingdom Conference?

A: I really like all aspects of Kingdom Conference. I love the chapels both because of the great keynote speakers as well as international choirs. I enjoy the talk-backs during the lunch hour after chapel as it allows the Asbury community to interact more personally with the speakers. The afternoon forums provide more opportunity for the community to interact with the speakers, as well as to listen to, and interact with, panels of other “experts” who discuss key Kingdom Conference themes. Finally, the International Potluck on Thursday evening is a time for the Asbury community, as well as the wider community, to enjoy wonderful international cuisine, music, and the “breaking of bread” with others in the more intimate setting of a table, as well as the keynote speaker that participates in the program.
