ALUMNUS CREATES YOUTUBE WESLEYAN FOCUSED CHANNEL

Christian education is becoming increasingly important to evangelism and discipleship in the cultural environment in which we live. Sterling Merritt Durgy, ATS 1974 MDiv, has created the
Standing with Wesley channel on YouTube to help address this need. The videos on this channel explain how the theology and teachings of John Wesley help Christians live their faith in today’s world. Each video focuses upon a particular topic by presenting Scripture, the writings of John Wesley, and the insights of scholars such as Kenneth Collins, Thomas Oden, Albert Outler, and Gareth Cockerill. There are currently sixteen
Standing with Wesley episodes, with more coming in 2021. There are also “Light For Your Path” videos that look at various topics from the perspective of Wesleyan Methodism. All sources are referenced at the end of the video for viewers to follow-up with their own studies. To maintain interest and to make the videos useful in Sunday School classes or other study groups, each episode is less than 30 minutes, with most less than 25. This allows time for discussion of the content in a one-hour meeting. Sterling is author of the book
Walking with the Full Assurance of Understanding (Wipf and Stock Publishers, October 2019), which has a book trailer on the
Standing with Wesley channel.

ALUMNUS FEATURED IN GUIDEPOSTS MAGAZINE ON HIS CHURCH’S EXPERIENCE BRIDGING RACIAL DIVIDES
Alumnus Derrick Shields is a pastor at a multiracial church in Columbus, GA. He wrote an article on diversity strengthening his congregation that was featured in the February edition of Guideposts magazine, a branch of Guideposts, a nonprofit organization that encourages others to grow in faith and in hope.
Leading a multiracial church, Pastor Derrick has found that the world tends to sweep hard issues under the rug and look the other way. He sees the importance of truth and living in a way that brings about kingdom community.
“We are a rarity in America: a proudly multiracial church where differences are neither fought over nor swept under the rug,” he writes. “How do we do it? In one sense, we don’t. God does it. We see our job as trusting God and, with his help, learning to trust one another. Trust enables us to disagree and express our feelings about difficult issues without coming apart.”
Read more about Pastor Derrick’s incredible experiences with vulnerability in the life of the church and bridging the gaps that are vast, finding that they are never too vast for Jesus.

ALUMNI PUBLISHES NEW BOOK TO COME OUT IN SPRING 2021

Alumni and former director of communications at Asbury Theological Seminary Scott Burson has written a book titled
All about the Bass: Searching for Treble in the Midst of a Pounding Culture War. Now a professor of philosophical theology at Indiana Wesleyan University, Dr. Burson’s new book will be released in May 2021.
“Many Christians are engaged in a bass-pounding culture war in which fidelity to our tribe demands a constant call to arms. This antagonistic posture, however, erects walls, deepens divides, and mutes empathy. All about the Bass takes a different approach by offering fresh and faithful sheet music. Using the metaphor of an audio equalizer, Dr. Scott Burson proposes ten action steps designed to turn up the treble of empathic compassion without compromising the bass of righteous conviction. In the first extensive Christian engagement with Jonathan Haidt’s Moral Foundations Theory, All about the Bass is academically grounded, yet written for a broad audience. Filled with practical advice and elevating stories of hope, readers will be inspired to move from hostility to hospitality. If you have been longing to sing a better song in our discordant world, All about the Bass is the book for you.”
