Guidelines, Terms, and Conditions for Participation
As a community gardener in the Garden of the Nations, I will abide by the following guidelines, terms, and conditions:
- I will not apply any pesticides, chemical fertilizers, or weed repellents to my or any other plot. This is an organic garden.
- I will not plant any invasive species in my garden plot, including, but not limited to, mint, kudzu, lambsquarters, or daylilies. (For a full list of invasive plants in KY, see the Kentucky Exotic Plant Pest Council.)
- I will maintain my plot with necessary weeding and watering.
- I will use water responsibly, only for watering my plants, and will turn off the hose when finished.
- When using the hose, I will be mindful of other people’s plots and will be careful not to drag the hose through them.
- I will be respectful to my fellow gardeners by allowing them the space to experiment and make mistakes, by joyfully sharing the hose and other tools, and by offering my help when it is requested.
- If I must abandon my plot for any reason, I will notify the Garden Coordinator at community.garden@asburyseminary.edu so that others are able to use the space. I will not give my garden plot over to someone else without first informing the Garden Coordinator.
- I understand that, if my plot is left fallow for more than a month, I may be asked if I desire to continue in the garden or turn over my plot to someone on the waiting list.
- I will keep my plants, especially running vines, within my own plot and will not leave any tools, rocks, or trash lying in the paths between the garden beds.
- I will not harvest anything from my neighbors’ plots without their permission.
- I will help to keep the garden a welcoming place by returning tools when I am finished with them, placing trash in the proper receptacles, placing weeds in the compost pile, and returning toys to the sandbox.
- If I bring my children to the garden, I will ensure that they do not tamper with other people’s plants.
- When I or my family are out of town, I will be responsible for ensuring that someone cares for my plot in my absence.
- At the end of the growing season, I will do the work to prepare my garden for winter by clearing it of any debris and by covering it with organic material.
- I will work to keep the garden a happy, secure, and enjoyable place where all participants can garden and socialize peacefully and in a neighborly manner.
