“A Seussian Ode to Coffee” by Dr. Ben Witherington III

Published Date: January 4, 2021

Sometimes I get asked

How I wrote so many books

I tell them ‘it’s the coffee’

And then I get strange looks.

To write a great book

You must use your ole bean

I took that advice quite literally

And bought a good machine.

I follow great examples

From the hoary past

Coffee is apostolic

That’s why it’s meant to last.

I’m thinking ole St. Paul

Drank coffee for us all,

Writing letters late at night

Quaffing it by candlelight.

And Peter without a doubt

Drank Peete’s from a spout

He liked his coffee hot

But his wife surely did not.

With these great examples

I must follow right along

And keep on making coffee

While singing the following song…

‘I will drink it when it’s hot,

I will drink it when it’s cold,

I will drink it from the pot,

When it’s three days old.

‘I will drink it with some cream

I will drink it while I dream

I will drink it when it’s sweet

I will drink it with my meat.

‘I will drink it at the dawn

I will drink it on the lawn,

I will drink it while I drive

I will drink it while I’m alive

‘I will drink a cappuccino

I will drink it while in Reno

I will drink it from a cup

I will drink it all up.

‘I will drink it in a bar

I will drink it in the car,

I will drink it with my friends

Oh the fun it never ends.

‘I will drink a macchiato

As if I won the lotto

I will drink a flat white

I will drink it day and night.

‘I will grind my own beans

And guard them from all fiends

I will clean my Cuisinart

But good cleaning is an art.

‘If heaven has no café

I will build one straight away,

Not Starbucks or Caribou

My own Java has to do.’

If you are too shy to do it,

    I shall carry the torch:

    How about all those cups

    Supped at Solomon’s Porch!

Dr.Ben Witherington: Greetings! To those who may take your courses I think they must be brave ones in the years of late 1990s! It would be good to hear and enjoy your lectures but not the homework after class it’s tough at least to me a Chinese in her30th year- old with no much background of seminary education! Tough coffee to me may I say it ;with all the best wishes, amen?
