Asbury Alumnus and Current Students Join Forces to Battle Poverty in Ohio

Published Date: June 8, 2018

One of our honorary alumni, Keith Wasserman, began Good Works, Inc. in 1981 to address a troubling poverty and homelessness situation in Athens, Ohio. Since then, the ministry has grown by leaps and bounds. Keith actively welcomes Asbury students to come for internships to get real, on-the-ground experience in dealing with some of the most vulnerable people in our society. Recently, one of our students (Tyler Tavares) wrote about his time interning with Good Works, Inc. and the things that he learned while he was there.

We love to see our alumni engaging with current students to help them get the type of experience and education that you cannot get inside the classroom. We encourage all our alumni to read the article Tyler wrote about his time at Good Works and what he learned while he was there. It is important for us to invest in upcoming clergy and ministers of the gospel, as there is much they can learn from those who have fought the good fight before them. There is also much we can learn from them.

In his article (which can be read in its entirety here), Tyler wrote:

One way a local church leader might provide the space and opportunity for God to work is by partnering with an organization like Good Works, Inc. who regularly serve the community in ways which might be different than usual. Doing so places our people in the hands of another, recognizing that God may work in and through them in ways we find new and beneficial.

Note: Good Works, Inc. in particular regularly hosts church groups and individuals for work retreats and other internships. They are still accepting applications for Summer of 2018 and if interested please reach out: http://good-works.net/internships/summer-service-internship/

We agree! Thank you, Tyler, for sharing what this experience meant to you and what you learned while you were there. We hope many more students will benefit from the work our Alumni are doing, bringing our Asbury family full circle.
