Experts Speak

Bennet Cerf wrote a book entitled, The Experts Speak. It is a definitive compendium of misinformation containing 2,000 examples of just how wrong ‘experts’ can be.

Here is what Gary Cooper said after turning down the role of Rhett Butler, which was given to Clark Gabel.  Cooper said, “Gone with the Wind is going to be the biggest flop in Hollywood history. I am just glad it’ll be Clark Cable who’s falling on his face and not Gary Cooper. Or, what about the manager of the Grand Old Opry who listened to Elvis Presley sing and gave him this advice, “You are not going anywhere. You are going back to driving a truck.”

Here is one of my favorites. If you look up the word ‘uranium’ in a 1930 dictionary you’d find this definition: “A white substance with no apparent value.”

There you have it!  God is constantly seeing something which no one else can fully see.

To everyone else he was just Simon, the big fishermen, a blustery ‘bull in a china shop’; but to Jesus, Peter was a ‘rock’, and he built his Church.

To everyone else he was just Matthew, the tax collector, the pawn of Roman authority, but in Christ, he became one who wrote down the Gospel.

To everyone else she was just a woman caught in adultery, the law-breaker, but Jesus told her she was forgiven, to rise, and sin no more.

To everyone else he was a criminal, condemned to die on a cross. But Jesus said, “Today, when this is over you will be with me in paradise.”

The ‘experts’ gave us 2000 examples of just how wrong experts can be.

Thanks for the lesson. I have kept it for a sermon I am going to preach, with your permission. (You will get the credit). Brings back memories of being in your Sunday school class, a loooong time ago!
