Little is Much When God is in It! Check Inside for your FREE Gift!

Published Date: April 4, 2018

A couple of months ago, you may have noticed that we honored some really incredible alumni who are doing great work in the largest United Methodist Churches in America. We are very proud of our graduates and all the work they do to bring in the harvest, so it is good to celebrate the accomplishments they achieve. We want to always recognize excellence whenever we find it.

With that being said, we want to take a moment to talk about the unsung heroes of the faith. It can be incredibly hard to remain encouraged when you are working behind the scenes in smaller contexts, where the work we do is not tracked or even noticed. Sometimes it can feel thankless. And, some react by wishing those in larger churches didn’t get quite so many accolades. We don’t think that ought to be the solution, but we do want to be intentional about recognizing those who serve in smaller, less noticed contexts. So, if you’re a small church pastor, a missionary in the middle of nowhere, an unsung hero in the helping professions, or a counselor who wants to help the people of God be whole–for those who face persecution rather than accolades–this one is for you!

We want all of you to know how proud we are of you. We think about you. We pray for you daily in our office, perhaps even more earnestly than normal. We read every piece of mail and every email you send. We smile when you call us on the phone. We mourn with you when you have sorrow, and we celebrate with you when you succeed. We want you to know that once you are part of the Asbury family, you can always be part of the Asbury family. And, as family, we don’t love you any differently than your more visible brothers and sisters. We want to make sure you hear us loud and clear: You are appreciated!

To put it in perspective, Asbury Theological Seminary currently has over 10,500 alumni who serve in 71 countries across the globe. They represent 144 different denominations and traditions, and they serve within incredibly diverse contexts, including everything from mental health counseling and business leadership to ordained clergy positions within the largest denominations in the world. We are proud to serve every single one of you. This is why we are working so hard to get resources into your hands through our partnership with the Office of Community Formation, the Church Planting Initiative, the Beeson Center and Lifelong Learning, Seedbed and Soul Care Community, as well as the new website features we have unveiled over the last year. Those things were developed specifically because we hear the plight of the small church pastor whose church can’t afford the Bible study curriculum they need. We hear the cries of burned-out people in the helping professions who need a renewal retreat to keep going in their ministry context. We want to give you the best in continuing education and continue to serve you well throughout your life. We want to make sure that we do everything in our power to help you be successful no matter where you find the Lord leading you. These offerings are our way of celebrating you and making sure you have the support you need to sow extravagantly and reap the hundredfold harvest. To that end, we are proud to announce our newest offering:

Introducing Thrive U

Our Alumni Director, Tammy Cessna, had this to say, regarding the release of this newest exciting resource:

Having grown up in the church (I’m a preacher’s kid), I know [Holy Week was] one of the busiest and best weeks of the year for so many of you who are in various ministry settings. We know you will be giving much of yourselves in service to the Lord, so we would like to give something to you! The Communications Office and the Alumni Office have been working diligently to add resources to Asbury for Life, which is our new alumni section of the Asbury Theological Seminary website. The newest addition to Asbury for Life is an online teaching resource called Thrive-U. Thrive-U is a collection of some of Asbury’s beloved faculty teaching some of their favorite subjects.

We will be adding to this collection in the coming months, and will be featuring teachings such as Dr. Christine Pohl on Hospitality, Dr. Steve Seamands on Spiritual Warfare and many more!

Today we offer:

  • Dr. Robert Mullholland: Spiritual Formation and Revelation 666
  • Dr. Craig Keener: Mind of the Spirit
  • Dr. Timothy C. Tennent: Series on Mark
  • Dr. Steve Seamands: Healing Prayer
