Need to Take a Breather? Come to Asbury for a Renewal Retreat!

Published Date: April 4, 2018

“Creating space for Christian leaders in ministry and business to experience holistic renewal and spiritual direction.”

What are Renewal Retreats?

Renewal Retreats are an opportunity for alumni and others in many forms of ministry can come to the Wilmore, Kentucky campus for a 3-5 day retreat at our very own Asbury Inn & Suites (https://www.facebook.com/asburyinn/). This retreat can have many facets; the most important element being Renewal. Each retreat is personally designed with elements to bring restoration to the whole person: body, mind, and spirit.

What does a typical Retreat consist of?

Meetings that you can make:

  1.  Peg Hutchins who will get your retreat started with spiritual direction and prayer. Peg Hutchins is a tiny powerhouse whose greatest motivation in life is love for God and witnessing lives transformed by Jesus. Peg’s secret strength is her husband of many years, Rick, a tall, quiet type who rides a Kentucky blue 1500cc Honda Gold Wing. On weekends, you will likely find Peg and Rick on the motorcycle exploring the scenic Kentucky countryside. Peg is a woman with a joyful laugh, twinkling eyes, and a ready hug for anyone she meets. She takes risks, keeps an open flexible mind for learning, and is always prepared to offer heart-deep hospitality to anyone who comes to her door.
  2. Massages are optional and for this experience, you could have one at Massages on Main with Cheryl or you could get one the Asbury Inn & Suites in their new Massage Chair.
  3. Meet with Mary M. Nagle, our Wellness Coordinator. She can meet with you to discuss your wellness goals and how to reach them.
  4. Meet with professors during your time on campus.
  5. Meet with Dr. Russell Hall, Ph.D. the Director of Training in the Department of Counseling and Pastoral Care, and supervisor for CPC Clinic for a counseling session.  Dr. Hall received his undergraduate degree in Theology from Anderson University, and Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from University of Kentucky. Dr. Hall is a Licensed Psychologist in the State of Kentucky.

Facilities you can enjoy during your stay include: the Student Center Gym, the BL Fisher Library, Lunch on campus on weekdays, Chapel Tuesday-Thursday, Daily Eucharist on weekdays, Campus Prayer Chapels, etc.

How much does a Renewal Retreat cost?

Renewal Retreats are the cost of the room and board, plus whatever sessions you might be signed up for. The good news is that there are full and partial scholarships available.

Some Renewal Retreat testimonies:

“I came away from this retreat with a definite sense of affirmation of some of the recent changes I’ve made in my life.”

“Thank you and all the ones who helped me. I do not remember a time when I was ‘mobbed’ by the Holy Spirit like that. I could hardly contain it all at Chapel on Wednesday.”

By Rev. Katie Grover, Master of Divinity 2013:  After having a taxing year personally and professionally, I needed a rest. I needed a reset. I needed to reconnect with God—to experience the love of our Heavenly Father, to know again Jesus has experienced my sufferings, and to be filled with the power of the Holy Spirit. There is one place I know to find these things: Wilmore, KY and Asbury Theological Seminary.

The Office of Alumni at ATS offers Renewal Retreats—a retreat designed for you personally (based on your requests) and covered in prayer. I availed myself of this opportunity and walked away feeling loved beyond measure from the moment I stepped on campus. Worshiping in Estes Chapel caused my soul to rejoice. Sitting down with former professors was a blessing. Being prayed for, prayed over, and listened to in a prayer session was healing. Hiking the Absury University trails amidst the Kentucky River Palisades allowed me to “raise mine Ebenezer.” And, nothing beats the sunsets in Wilmore. The great thing about these personalized retreats is that I could have chosen to do nothing but sleep, sit under the blue skies, or bury my head in a book in the library.

If you need to get away, reconnect, unplug, study, rest, reset, or renew, then the Renewal Retreat offered by the Alumni Office is something you should consider. No, it is something you should do. Asbury Theological Seminary and its people continue to love on you even after you graduate. At Asbury, we become a part of a community that cares. This fact is demonstrated by the opportunities offered to alum through the Alumni office, especially the Renewal Retreats. I am extremely thankful for the extravagant hospitality and love which was offered to me as a part of the Renewal Retreat. I will definitely look to be a part of one again. Maybe this time I won’t wait until I am at the proverbial end of my rope.”
