Thank You for Waddling with Us!

By Ashley Jenkins, Student Center Manager

On April 22, Asbury Seminary welcomed hundreds of runners and walkers into the community for our 3rd Annual Wesley Waddle 10K5K. The Wesley Waddle is one of our many endeavors to empower our students, staff, faculty, and alumni along their journey toward whole-person holiness through physical fitness, one workout at a time.

For this year’s race, we were incredibly excited to debut the Alumni Division and welcome over 40  alumni and their families back to Wilmore for race weekend. All participating alumni received a $5 race registration discount and were greeted with alumni swag at packet pick-up.

Alumni participation greatly contributed to the growth of our race as we registered 356 participants this year, over doubling the participant count of the 1st Annual Wesley Waddle, and are excited to continue growing with each year! In addition to alumni, we registered students and their families, staff, faculty, Asbury University students, teams from surrounding churches, and area runners to the race as we sought to create a community-oriented and family-friendly event. Highlights from this year’s race included the debut of our stroller division to encourage parents of small children to participate and the debut of electronic chip timing to permit friends and family to track participants and receive text and email notifications of their results.

Even with cool temperatures and rain on race morning, the energy level was incredibly high and the atmosphere enjoyable as participants met at the start line in front of campus at 8AM and ran or walked their respective 5K or 10K courses designed by alumnus and marathoner Rob Holifield. Over 50 Race Crew volunteers served as course ambassadors, water booth assistants, etc. as they cheered on participants towards the finish line.

After the completion of the race, all participants were welcomed to a post-race breakfast and awards ceremony where we honored our U.S. veterans at Thomson-Hood Veterans Center with a $1000 donation and a standing ovation. The awards ceremony also included cash prizes for overall 5K and 10K male and female finishers, recognition of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place overall, recognition of 1st place per age group, and a host of door prizes and giveaways such as a Chick-Fil-A gift basket and a complimentary 1-night getaway in the Presidential Suite at Asbury Inn & Suites.

To all participating alumni, thank you so much for your support! We are already looking forward to our 4th Annual Wesley Waddle 10K5K on April 21, 2018!
