ATS ALUM PUBLISHES BOOK ON THEOLOGY AND SCIENCE

Dr. Mike Mitchell (MATS ’04) recently published Truth before Logic: Finding Wisdom with G.K. Chesterton in a World Blinkered by Scientism. Here is the blurb from Amazon:

Truth before Logic explores the provocative implications of the claim that “you can only find truth with logic if you have already found truth without it.”

Chesterton counters the sterile, truncated worldview of scientism with an appeal to a deep awareness in the heart and mind without which there would be neither science nor religion. He stirs a buried awareness of the lucid but inarticulate truth that “romance is the deepest thing in life,” and counters a myopic materialism by making us more aware of the reality that racks the soul “with something of which God keeps the secret but which is stronger than sorrow or joy.”

Few voices will be more helpful in enabling the contemporary reader to understand science within the full scope of human experience. Chesterton’s insights are an antidote to the soul-atrophy that results from scientism and a ballast of sanity in a confidently confused world.

ATHLETIC ALUM FINISHES WORLD TRIATHLON CHAMPIONSHIP FINALS WITH FLYING COLORS

Rev. Jerry D. Coleman (M.Div. ’90) recently had the opportunity to compete in the 65-69 age group at the World Triathlon Championship Finals in Torremolinos, Spain on October 19, 2024. Here is what he had to say in the aftermath of the race:

The Lord was my joy and strength today! He helped me do my best. It wasn’t a PR on these challenging swim and bike courses but I feel good about it. There were 85 men from 20 countries in my age group. I came out of the water 24th. [My wife] Jan said I was 19th one third into the ride then I finished 13th, 4 seconds ahead of another from the USA. I was second from USA. But placing is not what matters. I did my best and the season is over now! PTL! A great way to end! It’s been so fun to see and be with people from all over the world! Thank you guys for all your support and prayers. You mean so much to me.

This race included a 1.5K swim, a 40K bike ride, and a 10K run. To see official race photos of Jerry throughout this event, see HERE.

DR. SAMUEL NAAMAN RECEIVES A FACULTY AWARD FROM MOODY BIBLE INSTITUTE

Dr. Naaman graduated from Asbury with his M.Div. in 1999. For his work at Moody, he was recently honored with an award. Here is an excerpt from an article by Linda Piepenbrink:

Honoring him for his tireless service as a professor of Intercultural Studies since 1997, Moody Bible Institute presented Dr. Samuel Naaman with the 2024 Faculty Citation Award during its annual Founder’s Week Bible conference on October 25.

“I can’t think of a colleague who’s more worthy of the award,” says Moody Provost Dr. Tim Sisk, who has worked with Dr. Naaman for two decades. “I’ve always been challenged by his passion for missions; he doesn’t lose it! He practices it, he lives it out.”

D.MIN. GRADUATE PENS HIS SECOND NOVEL

Chris Scruggs, Class of 2004, has published his second novel, Peace at Battle Mountain.

A series of economic crimes and murders place Houston attorney Arthur Stone in the crosshairs of murderous forces, corporate as well as personal. Years after surviving a car bombing during the 1980s banking crisis recounted in an earlier novel, Marshland, Arthur Stone is now one of Texas’s most respected and successful lawyers, a standing achieved at the cost of his marriage and his children’s well-being. Regretful and unforgiving of his wife’s betrayal, Arthur oversees a high-stakes lawsuit against a teetering energy corporation. A key witness in the case has just been assassinated, and the recent public disclosure of a socialite’s brutal murder brings further attention and international entanglement to the executive suite of the embattled company. While Arthur grapples with concerns for his children’s safety, new dangers await him and his investigators as they search for missing evidence and killers still at large. These searches take us through corporate suites, country club neighborhoods, exclusive resorts, and charming rural retreats populated by equally memorable characters.

One reviewer concludes:

“Interesting and informative, the story’s pace and its varied strands of plot are well managed, often with the characters themselves explaining judicial, police, and financial procedures, even to the point of enlightening us on the sleight of hand accounting that disguises unwise investments—otherwise known as fraud. Setting Peace at Battle Mountain apart from its genre is the leavening of spiritual yearning, which haunts Arthur Stone and guides his trusted advisors.” —Granville Sydnor Hill.
