Dr. Joel Archer

Assistant Professor of Philosophy and Theology

Dr. Joel Archer is Assistant Professor of Philosophy and Theology at Asbury Theological Seminary.

He received a B.A. from Asbury University before pursuing an M.A. and Ph.D. in Philosophy from Saint Louis University, an M.A. in Early Christian Studies from the University of Notre Dame, and a Ph.D. in New Testament from Duke University (expected 2026).

Dr. Archer’s areas of interest include philosophy of religion, analytic theology, metaphysics, the Gospels, historical Jesus studies, Wesleyan theology, and biblical theology. He is the author of The Problem of Divine Action (Cambridge University Press) and various articles in academic journals such as Philosophical Studies, Religious Studies, Philosophia Christi, Journal for the Study of the Historical Jesus, Journal for the Study of the New Testament, and New Testament Studies.

Dr. Archer grew up in Mendoza, Argentina. At Asbury Theological Seminary, he teaches courses in both English and Spanish.

He lives in Versailles, Kentucky, with his wife, Shelby, and their two daughters, Ellie and Chloe.
