Seminary Singers

Who We Are

The Seminary Singers is the choir at Asbury Theological Seminary. Seminary Singers exists to praise God through choral worship music. With a repertoire of a variety of styles that range from classical to contemporary, from Southern gospel to traditional, Seminary Singers seeks to lead others into worship of God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

We are also a community of the body of Christ, and we intentionally fellowship with one another throughout our time of preparing music. We consist of students, spouses, staff, and faculty. Many singers have different backgrounds with choral singing – from formal training to first-timers. All are welcome, and we help one another to learn music!

Rehearsals are Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12-12:50 in McKenna Chapel. Rehearsal includes homemade snack and fellowship time, followed by a hymn of the week, time of prayer, and rehearsal of musical selections. There will be additional rehearsals occasionally announced in preparation for special events, and there is a much-anticipated end-of-semester party twice a year.

Seminary Singers is a volunteer choir, or it can be taken each semester for 1 credit hour. If you are interested in joining Seminary Singers, contact danny.key@asburyseminary.edu or just show up!

When do we sing?

Seminary Singers sing in Chapel throughout the semester. In the fall semester we sing during Kingdom Conference, All Saints Day, and of course the Advent Vespers Service. In the spring semester we sing on Ash Wednesday, and our largest service is the Tenebrae Service. We also sing at Baccalaureate and Graduation, and we often sing for the Board of Trustees.

Director

Rev. Danny Key has been the director of the ATS Seminary Singers since 2018. A graduate of both Asbury University and Asbury Seminary, Danny is also an ordained deacon in the United Methodist Church. Danny brings over 40 years of music leadership experience to Asbury Seminary, having worked in churches in Georgia and Texas directing children, youth, and adult choirs.

Most recently, at Trinity on the Hill UMC in Augusta, GA Danny led six choirs, composed of members aged four to 95. Each summer the youth choir took a 10 day tour and traveled every fourth year to Europe.

Danny and his wife Kris, also an ordained deacon, live in Wilmore, KY and are proud parents and grandparents.

Accompanist

Mrs. Julie Tennent is the accompanist for the ATS Seminary Singers. She has a Bachelor of Music degree from Westminster College and an M.A. from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. She has been accompanying choirs for nearly 50 years, and especially loves accompanying or assisting in the worship of God’s people.

Most recently, Julie has worked on metrical settings and other lyrical settings of the Psalms, and has been serving as the managing editor of a new hymnal, Our Great Redeemer’s Praise. She enjoys the convergence of music and theology, gardening, hiking, and spending time with her husband and grown children.
