Dr. David Loren Thompson, Professor Emeritus of Biblical Studies at Asbury Seminary, passed away July 4, 2020. The family received friends July 9 from 5-7 p.m. at Joyner’s Funeral Home in Wilson, N.C. May 17, 1940 – July 4, 2020

Dr. David Loren Thompson, 80 of Elm City, formerly of Wilmore, Kentucky, passed away Saturday, July 4, 2020 at his home. The family will receive friends Thursday afternoon from 5 – 7 p.m. at Joyner’s Funeral Home, 4100 Raleigh Road Parkway, Wilson.

Dr. Thompson was an author, ordained minister of the Wesleyan Church, and renowned Old Testament Scholar. He was professor emeritus at Asbury Theological Seminary where he taught biblical languages and literature for over thirty years. Dr. Thompson also pastored several churches, including Aspen Hill Wesleyan Church, Rockville, Maryland, and New Life Community Church, Lexington, Kentucky.

Dr. Thompson is survived by his loving wife of fifty-eight years, Edith “Ede” Winterholter Thompson of the home; daughters, Gina Thompson Eickhoff and husband, Kyle of Elm City and Karin Thompson Van Horn and husband, Andrew of Wilmore, Kentucky; son, Scott Thompson of Lexington, Kentucky; his grandchildren, David Henry, Sophia and William Alex Van Horn and Emily Anne Eickhoff and a host of beloved cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Hewitt and Charlotte Louisa Thompson; sister, Joyce Bure and husband, Al and his brother, George Thompson and wife, Jeanie. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Inductive Bible Study Scholarship Fund at Asbury Theological Seminary in memory of Dr. Thompson.
