Asbury Theological Seminary’s President Transitions to Professor of World Christianity
WILMORE, Ky., Dec. 14, 2023—After 15 years of faithful service, Dr. Timothy C. Tennent will transition from the role of president at Asbury Theological Seminary to professor of World Christianity in the E. Stanley Jones School of Mission and Ministry. Dr. Tennent will remain a tenured faculty member at Asbury Seminary, a transition approved by the Board of Trustees. His final day as president will be on June 30, 2024.
Dr. Tennent, who has served as the 8th president of Asbury Seminary, began his tenure in 2009. He led the Seminary through its Centennial year, which included leading the completion of the 2023 Strategic Plan and the largest comprehensive campaign in the history of Asbury. He led in the founding of Seedbed publishing and New Room Conference, as well as a residential renaissance and hybrid education, which has resulted in the highest enrollments in the history of the Seminary. Dr. Tennent strategically led the Seminary to vastly expand its global partnerships as well as multiple Asbury Theological Seminary sites around the United States and the world.
Dr. Tennent said:
“I want to thank the Board of Trustees for the honor of serving this institution since 2009. I have countless memories of wonderful moments where the mission of Asbury Theological Seminary was faithfully extended. The faculty, staff, alumni, and friends of the seminary are unparalleled in their dedication and commitment to the mission. My love for Asbury Seminary and for the mission of Asbury Seminary remains undiminished, but the Lord has clearly spoken to me during my recent sabbatical that it is time to pass the torch to a new leader who will lead Asbury Seminary into our second centennial. However, as professor of World Christianity, I will be able to maximize my gifts in helping to fulfill the mission of Asbury Seminary. I will also be able to invest more time with our students through teaching. I am looking forward to this next phase of my ministry serving Asbury Seminary.”
“On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I want to publicly thank Dr. Tennent for his many years of service and vast contributions to Asbury Theological Seminary as president,” said Karen Thomas, chair of the Board of Trustees. “We are grateful for his dedication to our mission and his continued desire to share his profound theological teachings with our students.”
The Board of Trustees will select and appoint an interim president by June 30, 2024.
