WILMORE, Ky., January 24, 2025—Asbury Theological Seminary announces the departure of Reverend Dr. Michael Voigts, Professor of Christian Spirituality and Theology, who has been named senior pastor of First Methodist Waco in Waco, Texas. Dr. Voigts’ resignation is effective at the end of the spring semester, and he will begin his new role in May 2025.

Dr. Voigts joined the Asbury Seminary faculty in 2017, bringing a wealth of experience from his 24 years in pastoral ministry. His academic focus on contemplation and spiritual direction, particularly through the Cistercian monastic tradition, has illuminated connections between medieval spirituality, Wesleyan discipleship, and contemporary formation practices. As a lay member of the Lay Cistercians of Gethsemani Abbey, he has enriched the Asbury community with his depth of knowledge and passion for spiritual growth.

Returning to First Methodist Waco marks a homecoming for Dr. Voigts and his wife, Sheryl, both native Texans. Dr. Voigts previously served as an associate pastor at this church, and this transition reflects his enduring commitment to the local church and its mission.

Commenting on Dr. Voigts’ impact, Dean James Thobaben remarked:
“Dr. Mike Voigts has been a valued faculty member and colleague for over 8 years. He is a fine scholar, teacher & mentor.  Yet, we also know he will be an outstanding head pastor for an important ministry.  He will be greatly missed, but we fully believe our friendship will continue. Further, we look forward to his ongoing service to Asbury Theological Seminary, albeit in a new form.”

The Asbury Seminary community celebrates Dr. Voigts’ contributions and wishes him and Sheryl God’s richest blessings in this new chapter of ministry.
