ASBURY THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY MOURNS THE LOSS OF DR. M. DOUGLAS CAREW, VICE CHANCELLOR OF AFRICA INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY

WILMORE, Ky. (November 12, 2012) – Asbury Theological Seminary is sad to announce the sudden death of Dr. M. Douglas Carew, the Vice Chancellor of Africa International University, treasured friend and colleague. Carew passed away in his sleep while on an official visit in Indianapolis, Indiana on Friday, November 9 at the age of 56.

“It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our friend Douglas Carew,” said Asbury Seminary President, Dr. Timothy C. Tennent. “His quiet leadership, his sense of humor, and his scholarly and intentional approach to his work will be greatly missed. We express our condolences to his family and to Africa International University.”

Asbury Seminary and Africa International University forged a formal relationship in May 2011 with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding. This was one of Asbury Seminary’s first global partnerships designed to exchange personnel and resources. Carew was on campus to sign the MOU and offer AIU’s collaboration in this global theological education effort. Tennent said, “Douglas embraced the purposes of our partnership – mutual learning, encouragement, and collaboration toward common Kingdom goals. We remain committed to the partnership and as it bears fruit in the years to come, we will think fondly of Douglas and his work here on earth.”

Carew was the Vice Chancellor of Africa International University and the Associate Director of The International Council for Evangelical Theological Education. He held a Master of Divinity from Nairobi Evangelical Graduate School of Theology, Kenya and a Ph.D. from Trinity International University. He is survived by his wife, Ayiku, and his children, Oluniyi, Rodney and Seneiya.
